The present population of New York is set down in the statistics of the Alliance at 843,711, of which only 205,580 are provided with church accommodation, leaving the appalling tnajority of 638,161 unprovided for. But that is not all, nor the worst. We are at a lo.ss to ela.ss it by name with any of the teas in com mon use here. In appearance it somewhat re sembles Twankiiy, while it partakes of th« mingled flavors of the finest Hyson and Oolong. It has apparently the fragrant without the acrid quali ties of the green, with the soothing influence ol the black varieties. This i.s the first invoice ot lea of an>* amount, we believe, from Japan, and we notice its receipt as an interesting commercial fact—the opening of a new source of supply of this indispcn.sable commodity.—N. Y. Com. Character.—A good character is worth more than wealth to a young man. As him who is confined in a felon’s cell. What would he not give to be as pure as the dews that fell upon him in his native place? He sighs for smiles that greeted him in childhood—a mother’s kiss and a sister’s embrace. How coaid he put forth his right hand and sin? Alas! he listened to the charmer; he departed from the path ot rectitude; he associated himself with depraved characters, and now he reaps the bitter fruits of his folly. Young man, the time may come when you will leave a mother’s fold and seek your living abroad. Will you carry with you the influence oT a moth er’s love and a father’s prayers? or disregarding parental counsel, will you make companions of the vile, and take to your bosoms the polluted? One stain upon your fair character may prove your ruin. We pray you, then, beware. Let the shield of virtue surround your heart, and may the prayer, ‘“Lead us not into temptation,” con stantly live on your lips, as you go through the cares and sorrows of this short transient life. 0 TC 91.
